Smoking Woman in a Japanese Robe
I think a painting should look like a painting. Even when I’ve painted something in a naturalistic style, I usually add a few seemingly random strokes as a means of reminding the viewer that the scene is an illusion. To me, the artificiality of a painting is part of its charm.
This picture is more charming than usual: The strokes are crude, and the image looks more like a preliminary sketch than a finished work. But it’s full of fire and energy, and that’s enough for me.
Mr. Fuller has been busy or not so busy depending on how you look at it but he has an extensive body of original works for display on tumblr. Amazing. That is all you need to describe his work. Amazing.

Nintendo will soon release Wiispray, a controller assisted graffiti application for those who want to learn how to tag without the inconvenience of late night sprints from the authorities or the paint fume induced coma beginners tend to have. Purists of the art form will no doubt create a backlash, kids will keep playing and the controversy will have designers laughing all the way to the bank. Much like Guitar Hero, Dj Hero, Bongo Hero, Triangle Hero and Bag Pipe Hero.

Sometimes I work in an unorthodox backward manner, beginning with a naturalistic image and breaking it down repeatedly to find the art that it conceals. Sometimes I will paint a picture six or seven times, dismantling and rebuilding it until I’ve left nature behind altogether.
That was my plan in this case, but nature wouldn’t have it—so here is an image in which there is hardly a thimbleful of artistic interpretation.
And it’s just as well: Every artist knows that there’s a time to show off, and there’s a time to realize that he has nothing to contribute.
This is nature’s handiwork entirely. I was just a bystander.

Little green toy soldiers have lived through every war story a chid could imagine. What about their return home after war? Dorothy’s inspiration for Casualties of War stemmed from the personal hell soldiers live through after returning home. Her creative idea captures the stories we don’t know about: their suffering.
